Big Hill Open Space
A developer wanted to put more houses on this prime piece of real estate. Any developer would. But Anne Courtright had a different vision.
Space for all
Mrs. Courtright saw the beauty in this raw piece of land sitting in the heart of the city. A ridge with a view from the San Juans to Pikes Peak sits in the middle, a cozy valley rimmed on two sides lies to the East, and a gentle bluff gives way to an open runway to the West.
So Anne got together some funds, coordinated with several of her neighbors, and purchased the land from the private owners. She then established it as a land trust under the care of the City of Pueblo. That was fifty years ago.
Today, the land is is there for all of us to enjoy. But with minimal signage, no parking or lighting, no maintained trails, picnic tables, or benches, it is unclear to the neighborhood whether or not it is a park or private land. Instead it is used mostly as a dumping ground for those that would abuse it.Â
It's time to reclaim this treasure in the heart of our city as a space for all of Pueblo.
